NEWS: Jay Z Reveals Plans for “Tidal”, A Streaming Music Service! [KingpinTV.net]

As Jay Z sees it, there is a clear solution to the problems facing musicians in the streaming age. They should band together — behind him, of course.

On Monday, Jay Z, the rap star and entertainment mogul, announced his plans for Tidal, a subscription streaming service he recently bought for $56 million. Facing competition from Spotify, Google and other companies that will soon include Apple, Tidal will be fashioned as a home for high-fidelity audio and exclusive content.

But perhaps the most notable part of Jay Z’s strategy is that a majority of the company will be owned by artists. The move may bring financial benefits for those involved, but it is also powerfully symbolic in a business where musicians have seldom had direct control over how their work is consumed. CONCERT VIDEO: T-Pain Performs An Intimate Acoustic Concert Without Autotune, Amazing! [KingpinTV.net]

T-Pain’s fingerprints are all over pop, R&B and hip-hop. He wasn’t the first musician to use Auto-Tune as an instrument — he noticed it on a Jennifer Lopez remix, and remembers “Deep” well — but it was, as he says, his style. For a while, in the mid-2000s, he lived at the top of the charts. He dominated that brief moment of our lives when ringtones were a thing. He was celebrated as an innovator, and he happily took his talents where he was invited, which was everywhere.

But somewhere along the way, somebody got it twisted. “People felt like I was using it to sound good,” says T-Pain, in an interview that will air on All Things Considered. “But I was just using it to sound different.”

He just turned 30, but T-Pain has already done enough to drop a greatest hits albumnext week. We asked him if he’d grace the Tiny Desk without any embellishment or effects to show what’s really made his career: his voice, and those songs. (NPR Music)

INSIGHT: Shadeism & How It Affects Musical Culture [KingpinTV.net]

Bloggers note: This was inspired by a lovely young social worker who bought this to my attention.

Typical day relaxing with the boys. Sports are on, alcohol is flowing, we clowning each other and discussing various “man” topics such as the greatest athlete of all time and of course females

During this interesting discussion the topic of former female super group “Dentinys Child” came up. The round table then turned to “Who’s the hottest chick to emerge form the group?”

Of course the overwhelming answer was Continue reading

NEWS: Janet Jackson Reaches A Huge Milestone Michael Never Did! [KingpinTV.net]

Not only is Janet Jackson married to a billionaire, she’s also a 10-figure money maker herself. According to Variety, a tally of the 47-year-old’s earnings from her successful concert tours ($458 million), films like For Colored Girls and The Nutty Professor ($304 million), album sales ($260 million), and sponsorship deals ($81 million) has her exceeding the one billion dollar milestone.

This past February, Janet informed the world that she married fashion tycoon Wissam Al Mana in a hush-hush ceremony. Al Mana is a shareholder in Saks Fifth Avenue stores in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait; and director of Al Mana Retail.

Surprisingly, despite her late brother’s massive success, King of Pop Michael Jackson never reached the billion dollar mark. The few who have include Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, J.K. Rowling and Madonna, who was recently inducted after her last tour.

As for Ms. Jackson, she has no plans to stop raking in the dough. The singer confirmed that she is “working on a new project.”

NEWS: Drake Tells Media: Stop Preying On Chris Brown’s Insecurities! [KingpinTV.net]

Though their battle over Rihanna appears to be over, Drake and Chris Brown continue attacking one another in the press.

Drake appeared on East Village Radio’s “Keep It Thoro” show April 12 and told host Elliott Wilson that the media should stop preying on Chris Brown’s insecurities.

“His insecurities are the fact that I make better music than him, that I’m more popping than him, and that at one point in life the woman that he loves fell into my lap,” Drake said Friday. “I did what a real [brother] would do and treated her with respect, so she’s not up there talking down on me. All those things combined create an individual that comes up to your radio station and is going to do dumb [stuff].”

Drake and Brown both dated Rihanna, though Brown has been Rihanna’s long-time, on-again, off-again boyfriend.

Drake, Brown and their respective entourages got into an altercation at a New York club in June 2012 after Drake – who was dating Rihanna at the time – allegedly taunted Brown about his being with Rihanna.

Before telling Wilson Friday that no one wants to hear him rap against Brown since Brown isn’t a rapper, Drake said that beef between Brown and him is not his goal.

“It shouldn’t be about tearing that man down,” Drake said. “It shouldn’t be about wanting to see me and him tear each other down. We have an issue and it’s either going to drag out, or maybe in 10 years we’ll laugh about it over drinks. But just let us solve that.”

So far, Brown’s response to Drake’s interview has been a three-letter response on Twitter: “Lol.”

NEWS: Michigan Radio Station Yanks Lil Wayne And Rick Ross Music! [KingpinTV.net]

They say if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything… Hip Hop has gone too far, says one Michigan radio station. In a bold move this week, WUVS-LP 103.7 The Beat has decided to take a stand against Rick Ross and Lil Wayne by pulling their music from rotation, after being fed up with the disrespectful and violent lyrics portrayed in some of their recent songs.  Just last month, Lil Wayne found himself under fire when he hopped on the remix to Future’s “Karate Chop” and compared assaulting a woman’s anatomy to the beating of Emmitt Till, “Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels/Beat that p—y up like Emmett Til.” Epic Records quickly pulled the track and issued an apology to Emmitt Till’s family after receiving backlash.

The tipping point came this week, when Rick Ross released a song titled,  “You Don’t Even Know,” where he raps about slipping a “molly” into a woman’s drink and having sex with her without her knowledge. He says, Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it. As soon as the record dropped, people were wondering why it was okay for a rapper to blatantly talk about drugging and raping a girl. Is this what music has come to?

In a statement, WUVS-LP The Beat says it’s time that hip hop starts taking some responsibility: The questions have been asked, Is Hip Hop Music Destroying America, Is Hip Hop A Threat To Our Children or Should Rappers Be Accountable For Their Lyrics? You be the judge.  Earlier this year the song “Karate Chop” leaked online featuring rapper Lil Wayne.  He raps, “Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels/Beat that (expletive/woman genital) up like Emmett Till.”  A few weeks later a song by rapper Rocko featuring Rick Ross was released called “You Don’t Even Know It.”  Rick Ross raps, ‘Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.’

Yes, we have our freedom of speech right, but when is freedom of speech taken too far?” “Many would say both rappers have taken their lyrical content too far and offended too many.  The family and estate of Emmett Till have released a statement of disapproval over Lil Wayne’s disregard and disrespectful lyrics. Though his record label issued a statement of apology, the rapper has yet to do so.  In the case of Rick Ross, a petition has been started over his blatant disregard for women and the issue of date rape. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that over 300,000 women are raped or sexually assaulted per year in the United States alone. That is a disturbing number and should not be taken lightly. His lyrics not only condone the behavior, but he boasts about it in the song.  While some feel it’s only entertainment, many feel it sends and encourages the wrong message.  Several individuals and organizations have taken a stand and so are we.

Effective immediately Muskegon’s WUVS-LP 103.7 the Beat has pulled ALL Lil Wayne and Rick Ross music from rotation.  We pride ourselves on playing music that is non-degrading and non-violent. While we believe in freedom of speech, creative writing and individualism, we refuse to be part of the problem by spreading messages that could harm or end someone’s life.” I’m sure other radio stations will soon follow. It has to start somewhere. BET took a stand against degrading music years ago when they eliminated the late night show, “Uncut.” Since then, they’ve put such a strict policy in place that even a video like Ciara’s “Ride” or Nicki Minaj’s “Stupid H-e” can’t get airtime on their flagship show, 106 and Park.

NEWS: Jay-Z Signs All His Publishing Over To Warner/Chappell Music! [KingpinTV.net]

Jay-Z’s music catalogue has a new home. Yesterday, Hov signed himself and Roc Nation to a global publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music. The signing comes four months after Jon Platt‘s move to the company. As part of the pact, the publishers will have rights to his future and past recordings.

Says Hov:“The real meaning of success is being in the position to work with an individual you consider a friend. Jon Platt is such a person. He’s a man of extraordinary character as well as a remarkably talented executive with an ear for music and an eye for talent. It’s great to watch him grow to be one the best in the business.”

Says Jon:“I first partnered with Jay in 1996, and it’s been thrilling to work with my friend over the past 16 years as he’s grown into one of the world’s best songwriters and become a global icon. At the same time, Roc Nation is one of the most dynamic and influential music companies around. It is home to an extraordinary collection of hit-makers, who are writing and producing many of today’s most popular songs and collaborating with the world’s most successful artists. I couldn’t be happier to continue my relationships with Jay and Roc Nation and build on our partnerships at Warner/Chappell.”

Warner Music confirmed last September that Jon Platt, a senior exec at EMI Music Publishing for seventeen years, was joining the Warner/Chappell music publishing company. He departed the EMI publishing firm just before its acquisition by Sony/ATV. In his new job he is President Creative, overseeing Warner/Chappell’s A&R activities across North America, as well as inputting on general company strategy.

He reports to Warner/Chappell CEO Cameron Strang who said “Jon’s character, his leadership skills and his ability to identify, sign and nurture talent combine to make him one of the top executives in the music business. His unwavering commitment to songwriters and their music has led to his continued and long-term success. His approach makes him a perfect fit with Warner/Chappell and an outstanding addition to our senior team”.

Platt himself added: “Warner/Chappell is a creative force with an incredible heritage, a world-class roster of writers and a renewed sense of energy and purpose. Cameron and the team have already achieved great things and I am excited to begin a new chapter with them, helping drive that momentum. We share a common goal: to make Warner/Chappell the best home for today’s extraordinary talent and the songwriting stars of tomorrow”.

**BREAKING NEWS** Tim Dog Dead at 46 [KingpinTV.net]

Bronx rapper Tim Dog died today from a seizure following a lengthy battle with diabetes, reports the Source. He was 46.

Born Timothy Blair, Tim Dog reached fame in 1991 with “Fuck Compton,” a diss track toward Dr. Dre and N.W.A. – one of the most provocative salvos in the East Coast/West Coast rap tensions of the day. The song appeared on Tim Dog’s debut album, Penicillin on Wax, and prompted a rebuttal track from Dre himself. Tim Dog went on to release the East Coast rap disc Do or Die in 1993 and form Ultra, a hip-hop duo with Kool Keith. In the 2000s, he released two albums and was name-checked in tracks by Eminem and Nas.

Questlove’s Top 50 Hip-Hop Songs of All Time: ‘Fuck Compton’

In 2011, Tim Dog pled guilty to grand larceny for swindling a woman out of $32,000 in an online dating scam, a scandal covered in a 2012 episode of Dateline NBC. He was sentenced to five years’ probation.
