Dancehall and reggae star Vybz Kartel has been convicted of murder. In a high-profile trial under heavy security, Kartel and three co-defendants were found guilty of killing an associate, Clive Lizard Williams, in a row over a missing gun. One defendant was cleared of wrongdoing.

UPDATE: Machel Montano sentencing Postponed to February 25! [KingpinTV*net]

The courts in Trinidad and Tobago intend to sentence soca superstar Machel Montano on five criminal charges on February 25.

Montano, the headline act for several Carnival 2013 fetes, including his own show Machel Monday scheduled for February 4, had previously assured his fans that he would be performing this Carnival in the face of his court hearing today.

Lawyers representing Montano and those representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, made legal submissions to the magistrate before a packed to capacity courtroom, at the Port of Spain Magistrates Court.

The legal arguments surrounded whether or not Montana can be sentenced to community service for the offences.

“There was a mini-stampede to get into the courtroom,” Express reporter Rickie Ramdass said, adding that at times police officers had to lock the doors to the courtroom to prevent fans and other people from entering.

The adjournment of Montano’s sentencing will allow the soca legend to perform at Trinidad carnival, which is recognized as one of the largest outdoor festivals in the world

NEWS: Machel Montano To Be Sentenced Stemming From Charges In 2007! [KingpinTV*net]

On December 10, 2012 Soca legend Machel Montano was found guilty on four charges of assault against Gerard Borwin, Brandis Browne, Janelle Lee Chee and Russell Pollonais. This stems from a 2007  fracas outside a nightclub in Port of Spain on April 26, 2007.

Montano was also found guilty of using obscene language during the same incident.

The matter  was adjourned to January 17, 2013, after hearing pleas of leniency from Montano’s attorney. It was ordered he remain free on bail pending the courts decision.

Montano can be sentenced to a maximum of five years imprisonment after been found guilty of such charges in the island nation of Trinidad & Tobago

Kevin Lyttle (born Lescott Kevin Lyttle Coombs, 14 September 1976) is a soca artist hailing from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. His biggest hit to date is this melodic track “Turn Me On”, which was recorded by Lyttle and the dancehall artist Spragga Benz. The track was released originally in 2003 but didn’t crack into the U.S. market until 2004. It was a major hit in numerous European countries including the U.K. and Denmark. It was certified platinum in Austrailia.

Lyttle is currently working on a new album scheduled to be released in 2012

Rupert Clarke (born September 10, 1975), best known by his stage name Rupee, is a soca musician from Barbados. He was born in military barracks in Germany to a German mother and a Bajan father, who was serving in the British armed forces at the time. He later migrated to Barbados. He is signed to Atlantic Records.

By the age of nine, Rupee had lived in three different cultures – German, English, and Barbadian.

Spending his first years in England, he was exposed to a contrast of sounds which reflected his parents’ diverse backgrounds: calypso and reggae on the side of his West Indian father, pop and rock and roll from his European mother. He and his siblings would often perform on stage, coming up with all sorts of chants, rhymes and antics to tease the audience. Rupee eventually moved to Barbados in 1985. He had his first major break after winning the Richard Stoute Teen Talent Competition in 1993

In 2003 he released this classic “Tempted to Touch” which also spawned a remix with reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee.

You would laugh at the one dude who couldn’t handle it, but feel concern for the lady who got crushed. Machel Montano teamed up with Shaggy (remember him?) to create this classic based on the “Toro” (Spanish fighting bull) which spawned another Trinidad carnival anthem. True to form all carnival revellers who “charged” during “TORO TORO” were fully equipped with their red rags very much like bull fighters. It is a common misconception that the color red is supposed to anger the bull, because bulls, in fact, are colourblind, but in the end, this is all about de Carnival

During his career, which spans over 25 years, he has recorded several songs alongside many of Caribbean music’s most popular acts, such as Admiral T, Alison Hinds, Beenie Man, Calypso Rose, Burning Flames, Drupatee, Wyclef Jean, Canibus, Red Rat, Shaggy, Sparrow, Denise Belfon, Ken Marlon Charles (KMC), Destra, Walker Hornung, Vybz Kartel, Mohombi, G-Unit, Black Stalin, David Rudder, Buju Banton, Mr. Vegas, Doug E. Fresh, Pitbull and many others. In 1987 he was the youngest finalist to ever win the Caribbean Song Festival.
